Open the Mullvad app, hit Connect, then run the test widget at the top of this page. Three checks tell you whether Mullvad is doing its job:

  1. Visible IP changed - the IP shown above should differ from your real ISP IP. If unchanged, the tunnel is not routing traffic.
  2. Country matches your selected server - if Mullvad says you're connected to "Germany" but our checker shows your real country, the tunnel is broken.
  3. All three leak rows show SAFE - WebRTC, DNS, IPv6. If any row reads LEAK / EXPOSED, your real IP is escaping the tunnel.

Specific Mullvad settings to verify: Mullvad Browser, Bridge mode, account number. Look for those terms in the app menu - they're the Mullvad-specific names for the protections we're testing.

"Netflix US works inconsistently"

Fix: Mullvad doesn't optimize for streaming. Rotate cities or accept that some days Netflix wins. Use Nord/Surfshark if streaming is primary.

"No port forwarding since 2023"

Fix: Removed for security reasons. If you need port forwarding for torrenting, use ProtonVPN (Plus) or PIA. Mullvad still works for torrents, just slower seeding.

"Account number lost = can't recover"

Fix: Mullvad has no email tied to accounts - this is the privacy feature. Save your 16-digit number in a password manager. No recovery possible.

Based on Mullvad's default configuration:

  • WebRTC: OS firewall block

  • Kill switch: on by default

Notable incident in Mullvad's history: 2023 Swedish police raid - servers seized, found no recoverable data (proved RAM-only architecture in court)
