Open the Hotspot Shield app, hit Connect, then run the test widget at the top of this page. Three checks tell you whether Hotspot Shield is doing its job:

  1. Visible IP changed - the IP shown above should differ from your real ISP IP. If unchanged, the tunnel is not routing traffic.
  2. Country matches your selected server - if Hotspot Shield says you're connected to "Germany" but our checker shows your real country, the tunnel is broken.
  3. All three leak rows show SAFE - WebRTC, DNS, IPv6. If any row reads LEAK / EXPOSED, your real IP is escaping the tunnel.

Specific Hotspot Shield settings to verify: Catapult Hydra, Smart VPN, Auto-protect. Look for those terms in the app menu - they're the Hotspot Shield-specific names for the protections we're testing.

"Hydra protocol slower than WireGuard on some routes"

Fix: Settings -> Protocol -> WireGuard. Hydra optimizes for streaming bandwidth, not latency. WireGuard wins for ping-sensitive use.

"Free tier only US, blocked by Netflix"

Fix: Free tier is too restrictive for streaming. Upgrade to Premium for 80-country access + streaming-optimized servers.

"Premium blocked by Hulu after a few weeks"

Fix: Hulu detection updates. Switch to a different US server. Hydra protocol's obfuscation helps but isn't perfect.
